An International Workshop on “Medication Safety and Pharmacovigilance was organized by APP Community and Clinical Pharmacy (CCP) Division in collaboration with UWISoP at District Sangre Grande Hospital, Trinidad, West Indies on 29th June, 2016. The purpose of this UWI-RDI funded workshop was to create awareness among healthcare professionals to promote rational use of drugs and to inform them about the significance of adverse drug reaction reporting in a healthcare system.
The key speaker Dr. Sameer Dhingra, International Head, APP Clinical Pharmacy Division from School of Pharmacy, Faculty of Medical Sciences, The University of the West Indies, Trinidad & Tobago emphasized on the effective, safe, and economical use of the drugs. He pointed out that adverse drug reaction reporting (ADR) is an integral part of a healthcare system since the information collected during the pre-marketing phase of drug development is inevitably incomplete with regard to possible ADRs. He pointed out that the tests in animals are insufficient to predict human safety. Moreover, patients used in clinical trials are selected and limited in number, the conditions of use differ from those in clinical practice and the duration of trials is limited. Further, information about rare but serious adverse reactions, chronic toxicity, use in special groups (such as children, the elderly or pregnant women) or drug interactions is often incomplete or not available during the clinical trials. He further spoke in context to local and international scenario and urged the healthcare professionals to come out and report ADR irrespective of its nature and type.
This international workshop was attended by various healthcare professionals including chief pharmacist of the hospital and remained a grand success in creating awareness among healthcare professionals regarding the medication safety and significance of adverse drug reaction reporting.
